Cloak Weaving

Cloak is a traditional hand-woven article which has been pro. duced in the southern regions of our country such as Ahvaz, Bushehr, Kouhpayeh and Naeen in Isfahan province since long time ago. At the present time the weaving of the most famous woolen cloaks is being done in Mohammadieh, the historical quarter of the ancient city of Naeen as a native hand-woven ar-ticle. The cloaks woven in this township are mainly produced in red and fair brown colors. The fibers used in cloak weaving include camel wool, lamb fleece and cotton fibers for the looms. In the first stage of weaving, the wool bulk which has undergone the process of hair-removal are cleaned and purified. Cloaks are normally produced in the four natural colors of black, dark brown, camel-like and yellow. In order to produce other colors of cloak, herbal pigments such as pomegranate skin, madder and etc. are used.

The furs are formed as spindle after being spun. The weaver spins the prepared spindles with a manual loom on a reel. The spindles are put in the shuttle at the time of weaving; moving to and from the cloak is woven by the alternative movement of foot pedals. The cloak weaving looms like most of the other traditional woven articles are wooden. After being woven, the cloak is separated from the looms and is mantled to another loom to be polished and pressed. These cloaks have been always exported to the Arabic countries of the Persian Gulf and have been famous for their quality .The length of each piece of cloak is 6 meters and its width is 75centimeters.
